Rallying for Life
Posted January 22, 2010

Today, I will be attending the Kansas Rally for Life in Topeka, marking the 37th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade – joining hundreds of thousands of Americans who will be attending marches and rallies across the country, including in our nation’s capital.

As we stand and observe this day for a 37th time, let us always remember the lives of 50 million babies that this ruling has cost. We must never be afraid to give a voice to the voiceless, upholding the dignity and value of every innocent life.

Along with this tragedy of the unborn, we must also remember and include the woman in our thoughts and prayers as well. Women, who out of financial, emotional or other reasons, make that decision to end her child’s life -- she too is a victim. No woman should be left to such a desperate decision which they will ultimately regret and grieve for the rest of their lives.

While the debate continues as to whether Roe v Wade provided women a “choice”, the reality is that most women who have abortions often feel they have no choice but to end the life of their baby. This is where the real fight lies. The fight to reach these women and be able to provide the resources and support they require to carry their baby to term.

I only need to look to my own two daughters, whose birth mothers defied the odds and with barely any outside assistance gave their (and my) babies life. America is known as a generous and compassionate nation, and we must continue to reach out and help others to recognize the need to assist these women.

Thankfully, I am seeing the signs of a beautiful new awakening in our country – with a majority of Americans seeking to return our country to its founding principles – the most basic of which is that we are endowed by our creator with certain unalienable rights, among those which are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

It is my fervent belief that as we unite and work to restore our country to those important foundations, that we are also witnessing a subsequent call to protect the unborn.

Hearts and minds are changing -- and more Americans say they are pro-life than ever before. A wide majority of Americans support severe restrictions on late-term abortion, oppose using tax dollars to pay for abortions, and reject stripping doctors of their right to not participate in procedures to which they have moral, ethical, or religious objections. These are wonderful signs - yet the cause must go on.

In closing, I applaud the many organizations and millions of Americans, in Kansas and elsewhere, dedicated to this cause of life. The Roe v. Wade ruling changed our culture overnight -- and I am honored to be part of the ongoing rally to change it again -- to a culture of life.

Join with me in upholding the right life and liberty -- so that all may enjoy the pursuit of happiness.

Sincerely,
