Lightner Praises Kansas Senate for Defending State Sovereignty

Olathe , Kan. – Patricia Lightner, Republican candidate for Congress in the 3rd District of Kansas, today praised the Kansas Senate passing SCR 1615, the resolution upholding Kansas State Sovereignty under the Tenth Amendment of the Constitution.

“Today’s action by the Kansas Senate is great news in the continuing debate over the proper role of the federal government. Whether it is in regard to health care, education, or a large number of other issues, Washington has too often overstepped its bounds under the Tenth Amendment, and today’s action reaffirms where Kansas stands when it comes to our rights as a state,” said Lightner.

Lightner added that the action of the Kansas Senate was the result of a grassroots uprising by hundreds of Kansans who signed onto the petition in support of the resolution, whose chief sponsor was Senator Mary Pilcher Cook.

“Kansans made it clear in droves that they want the federal government to stay out of where it does not belong and they wanted Kansas lawmakers to take a stand. The people are speaking and our State Senators listened,” she said.

Lightner also urged state lawmakers to back the resolution up with teeth in other areas.

“I fully support the Health Care Freedom Amendment and any other actions that Kansas can take to reclaim state sovereignty. This cannot simply be a one time action – it must be a signal that Kansas will assert its rights under the Tenth Amendment,” she aid.

Lightner concluded by stating how the ultimate responsibility lies in the hands of members of Congress.

“The principle of limited government has been a cornerstone of why I am running for Congress – we must send people to Washington deeply committed to reducing the size and scope of the federal government, not those who will say one thing but turn around and vote another once the spotlight is off. Once elected, I look forward to joining fellow constitutional conservatives in upholding the Tenth Amendment,” she said.

SCR 1615 passed 33-7. More information can be found regarding the bill's contents at http://www.pilchercook.com/TenthAmendment.
